I Love the 80's

My claim to fame, or one of my reasons for notoriety, amongst my (mostly 6+ year older than me) friends is the fact that I was *barely* born in the 70's. That's right, folks, VDog *just* made it into the world in time to be born in 1979. Two weeks to spare, even.

So why in the heck am I writing a post about the 80's? To gloat that I was but a wee lass while many of you got to come of age during the most awesome-est decade EVAH?? No, because CityMama had a whole week (or so) of '80's themed posts, and I felt inspired.

Here's a few of my favorite things from the 1980's:

Toys: Care Bears (I loved the one with the heart), Cabbage Patch Kids (I always wanted a preemie one and never got one; however in real life I DID have a preemie, strange, right?), My Little Pony's, my super awesome boy's BMX dirt bike (I could be a tomboy like that).

TV/Movies: He-Man (I have the POWER!!!) and his not-quite-as-cool counterpart, She-Ra, The Smurfs, the aforementioned Care Bears, and then moving on to super cool shows like Full House and Perfect Strangers. My older sister and I LOVED watching Dukes of Hazzard and The A-Team when our parents were busy minding our two younger siblings.

One of the first movies I saw in the theaters was Return of the Jedi. Our whole house was seriously obsessed with Star Wars. (Oh Luke, he's SOOO cute! *swoon*) We had the tapes of Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back, so even though I was only six, I had seen both prequels numerous times before I learned about Ewoks.

Music: While the rest of you, I'm sure, were listening to some super cool New Wave music, I was listening to KIIS FM (home of Rick Dees in the morning).
I dove head first into Debbie Gibson, Tiffany, Martika (oh yes I did), and eventually, New Kids on the Block. Joey was my favorite. Of course, Madonna was there, but she was my BFF's fave, and you CAN'T have the same favorite singer. Like, fer reals.

Clothes: And then there was the leggings. And stirrup pants (PLEASE tell me you didn't wear those). The legwarmers were HAWWWT. As were the Jelly shoes. Don't forget the Guess? Jeans and jean jackets (but DON'T wear both at once!).

Then, of course, there was the Aqua-Net necessary Wave Bang hair-do:

Don't even try to hide the fact that you lurved your Aqua Net, too.

Why did YOU love the 80's?

Loved the '80s! I have about 4 years up on you, but everything you mentioned is what I lived for. For music I have to add in Blondie, Donna Summers, U2, Depeche Mode, Cindy Lauper, Michael Jackson. Movies included ET. TV wasn't the same without Facts of Life, Three's Company, Lavern and Shirley, The Cosby Show. Ah ... the 80s were so much fun!

Have to admit I did LOVE my stirrup pants. Funny how things do cycles too - my DD loves care bears and my little pony's. She doesn't have a cabbage patch kid though - looks like I'm passing on my deprived childhood to her.

Dood. Slouch socks and Saved By the Bell. Sigh.

My Clicker butane-powered curling iron. I still long for that appliance...

Well there was the acid washed jeans, the mis matched matching socks, the aqua net, so very many things. The music, the TV shows.

Oh my gosh! Thanks for the memory trip :-)

have I mentioned lately that I hate you and that I'm going to come there and suck your youth..hmm..
So I was born in 1966 which means in 1980 I was in the 7th/8th grade. I graduated HS in 1985..which means that my LIFE was in the 1980's.
So to answer your questions..YES..yes..god yes..yes yes yes. The 80's were perfect, from Magnum PI, Madonna, Blondie, Stirrups, Puffy shirts, side pony tails, feathered hair, combs in your socks, tube tops, lip gloss, pot, feathered roach clips in your hair, boat shoes, friendship beads on safety pins, driving fast, busch beer.. Oh I can go on for ever..
FYI: Joel Chadwick is the name of my Cabbage Patch doll and i have the Pink Care Bear w/ the heart, my boyfriend Tom gave it to me before prom senior year.

Ah man that takes me back. Being a child of 1978 married to a man of 1969 there isn't a lot of common ground on the pop culture.

Dude. I could so write an entire week's worth of posts on the '80s.

I loved that stupid pogo ball.

I may've been the only one lacking in Aqua Net!

Dude, the Cabbage Patch horses! It was on the wrapping for those that I took note of Santa's handwriting... ;p

I think you knew I loathed KIIS and lurved Pirate Radio, blaring the Guns n' Roses. ;p

don't forget The Bangles! The Go-Gos!

Hypercolor shirts! Too much neon! biker shorts with the attached skirt-over!

And good call with the Puff paints, 2nd journal! [assuming that is what she meant by "Puffy shirts".]

My teeny plastic skateboard. The original NES, and the Atari before that! Mad Libs!
Whitney Houston! (gawd, I remember singing along to that in 2nd grade with Kristen)

Too much!

Oh, the 80's. I loved all the music I could get my ears on. The pinch rolled pants with colorful socks over the top. Perms. And I was more of a White Rain girl than aquanet.

Yes, I was an Aqua Net victim. 80's music, best decade ever!

I am such a victim of the 80's.. and I was officially all into it considering I am old as flucking dirt..

I loved the two tone jeans.. the hair bows.. the rubber bracelets... and my hair was hard core HUGE!!!!

I wore stirrups and leggings into the year 2000. I wish I were kidding. It takes me a long time to catch up, I guess. I still remember the smell of Aquanet and a very special summer with some boys...

You're the cutest thing I've ever seen, and I wore stirrup pants.

You know I HEART the 80s. And, I remember each of the things you mentioned. Esp. Debbie (swoon) as I was her for Halloween last year. I wonder if I should try to do another 80s chick this year?

You are too cute and LUCKY THING because Bossy is always depressed when confronted with Young People.

Hmmmm ... I loved being young and not having bills or mortgages or stress or a job. THAT's what loved about the 80's!

Aqua Net? What the hell is that?

I spent the early 80's dressed as either Madonna or Boy George...

I hated the 80's. I had ugly hair, even for the 80's and my mom wouldn't buy me a Swatch watch,a Coca-Cola shirt, OR Guess jeans.

Wait, did I just poop on your 80's party?

Jennifer said...

My swatch watches with swatch guards. OH how I loved them. And! Guess? jeans.

Dukes of Hazzard was my favorite show and I had the lunch box.

I totally forgot about She-ra. I was born in 76.

I don't know if this was a boston thing only, but you just weren't cool unless you wore Sweats Bi Ebe pants. I tried doing a google search on them a few months back and came back practically empty!! I couldn't believe that such an essential part of 80's boys fashion wasn't even wikipedia'd! I demand a Sweats Bi Ebe resurgence. And Dukes of Hazzard was my favorite show. GI Joe was my favorite toy. And still is.

I love that picture of you - your hair could NOT be more stylin'.

jelly shoes, Guess, He-Man, She-Ra, Jem and the Holograms, all that GREAT stuff.

The 80's were awesome.

Let's see What I loved:

Depeche Mode,
Flock of Seagulls,
The Breakfast Club,
my first concert (Journey-Escape-1983)
my first concert-date (Huey Lewis & The News-Sports-1984)
First Love (Huey Lewis - it works - still with her)

What I hated:

Being an awkward teenager
not fitting into any "clique"
Testosterone induced Hormonal Surges that I believe make menopause look like a simple mood-swing.
Kill-Haole day. (Growing up in Hawaii as a white-boy sucks)
Moving to Arizona (1985) and not realizing that you can't walk barefoot outdoors in June.

Anything else? {grin}
