I just had a trying dinner with the Little Man, to say the least. He wouldn't eat anything I put in front of him. Not even Cheerios. It was that damn bad.
I managed to get some baby food down him, and his reflux medicine.
By the end of the meal, both my shirt and pants were wet.
He refused to take his nap this afternoon, which no doubt was the reason for him being Fussy McFusserson tonight. But the rest of the day had been nice. What happened? Ugh.
++++++++
Little Man has managed to chip his left front tooth after he had it for only about two weeks. This says to me that I am in serious trouble for the future. I have no idea how he did it. I can only "look forward" to more of his craziness as he gets older.
+++++++
Today at Gymboree I got the dreaded dropped octave "Oh." You know the one? Where the person you are talking to lowers their voice and gives you that, "OH" (while they think to themselves, "how awful, OMG, what do I say now?").
We are trying out the "Level 3" classes since that is the age range Little Man is supposed to be in now -- 10 to 16 months -- and the minimum requirement skills-wise is that they be able to crawl. These classes are a whole different beast than the mellow, barely moving and shaking Level 2 classes for the 6 to 10 month olds.
I've noticed that Little Man is by far the least advanced and the shrimpiest out of the kids (but to be fair, there are SIXTEEN MONTH OLDS (!!!) there).
One boy I saw looked somewhat in the same range as Little Man, size-wise, so I asked how old "Jack" was. The mom said, "one next week."
She asked me about Little Man and I said that he'll be one three weeks from today, on New Year's Day.
"Oh, wow! When did you go in the hospital? When did you know?" she asked.
"Actually I went into the hospital with pre-term labor on December 19th at 30 weeks, and he was born at 32 weeks," I replied.
"Oh."
"Well he seems to be fine now!"
"Yeah, he's doing great," I shrank, absorbing the "Oh" of pity.
I haven't gotten that "oh" in a long time. Since Little Man has grown so tall, I've stopped getting the OMFG, WHY is your baby SO SMALL?!?!?!
Once, when he was five months old, a woman asked if he was two months old. That one really hurt.
It's so hard when I feel like people think that there's something "wrong" with my baby.
I can't believe the number of people who asked me in the last month if Little Man is walking yet. I mean, how many full-term ten month old boys do you know that are walking?? I don't know any. Grr....
+++++++
I'm feeling sensitive and a bit raw today.

Le Sigh.
There's a 9 1/2 mo old walking in our group and she gets that OH of pity b/c omg like THAT'S what you want to be dealing with already.
I was at a party over the weekend and there was a little boy there, I was eyeing him and measuring his language/behavior against his size. (cuz my profession ya know) I was having a little red flag go off and then I went - oh, I bet I know what's up - sure enough - a while later someone asked if he'd started Kindergarten this year and his mom, no, he'll turn 3 in January.
In other news - sorry he was a poo with the no sleep and no eat - its' something in the air - we're miserable here.
Le Stinkers! That's what I say. I don't know of any 10 month old children who are walking confidently! People are silly and insecure.
BTW- little Man and I share a birthday!
-HH
It's so unfair that people have to be so 'concerned' when it's none of their business. And I'm sure you're tired of 'defending' little man. There is nothing to defend! He is by far one fo the sweetest and happiest little dudes I've seen (though only in the virtual world). Are those walking, chubby 10 month olds as happy and vibrant as your child?
As for the his eating fits... they will come and go. I've figured out that these kids of ours, they like to assert their authority now and then. In a very messy manner.
BTW, Makenna didn't make walking a fulltime gig until she was 14 months. She was born fullterm, as was I, and I walked at 16 months!!
Poo poo on everyone else! The first time I met the Little Man, I thought he was perfect, maybe a little squirmy when he figured out I was a total novice at anything baby, but definitely perfect! :)
don't let the evil mommies getcha down....
little man will be walking soon enough. Enjoy these days, they will vanish in an instant!
I agree with anon above. Every child does it differently. Mine walked then talked. Some talk then walk. It's all different. Just remember how many synapses have to fire to get those kids up and a-going. Ignore the meanie mommies. You'll see many more before it's all over, but smile and internally think the word "bitch" and it'll be okay!
I get this all the time for both of my kids. Le sigh, indeed. Ignore tha haters.

Thanks, gals, you are all so sweet.
I don't even care about the walking thing (at least that's what I tell myself - HA!) -- it is just SUCH a ridiculous question! Each time I got asked that -- at 10 months!! -- I would think, "Are you freaking kidding me??"
Competimommies, Le Sigh.
My 30-weeker didn't walk until she was 15 months, and my 33-weeker didn't walk until he was 18 months. EIGHTEEN months! He weighed 13 lbs. on his 1st birthday. He'll be six in May and I have to roll up his 3T pants.
Size wise - it goes both ways. I get so sick of people saying, "My gosh. He's only 6 months old. He Is A Big Boy. Does he eat like all the time?" I've even had one person say, "Well, it's a good thing he's a boy and not a girl, being so big and all." WTF?
I guess it's hard to think of the right thing to say all the time...
*HUGS*
Sorry to hear there were raw feelings and harshness.
The Little Man is indeed super Awesome and Adorable.
Best little bunneh evar. :P
If it's any consolation I get people telling me all the time that Boog is so small, which he's not.
I always want to say, no he's not small, he's average not like your freakishly large child. But I don't cause that would be mean. :)
First, my son did not crawl until he was ten months, forget about walking. Second, haiku mama is published by my publisher and I have a copy. I always wonder, "who would care about this book." Apparently the answer is you.
Happy birthday, V.
